Via Francigena in mountain bike  :  The Program

Day 1  :  San Miniato  -  Gambassi Terme  -  30 km.  -  During this first leg we'll be riding across the scenic hilly ridges of Val d'Elsa, enjoying breathtaking views over the typical Tuscan countryside : an endless sea of hills covered with vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees.

Day 2  :  Gambassi Terme  -  Strove  :  35 km.  -  During this panoramic stage we'll be cycling to the famous medieval town of San Gimignano, the "City of the Beautiful Towers", passing the Pancole Sanctuary and the Romanesque parish church of Cellole. After a very suggestive loop across the monuments of town we'll be heading towards Strove, biking scenic ups and downs across the typical Val d'Elsa countryside.

Day 3  :  Strove  -  Siena  -  27 km.  -  Today we'll be heading towards the fortified town of Monteriggioni (one of the best preserved medieval towns of Italy) passing the imposing Castel Pietraio and the suggestive abbey of Abbadia Isola. A circular loop inside the mighty walls of town will give us the sensation of jumping back in time of about 800 years. Then, once in Siena, you can spend the rest of the afternoon visiting its wonderful monuments.

Day 4  :  Siena  -  Buonconvento  -  35 km.  -  During this fourth stage we'll be biking the scenic ridges of Val d'Arbia following sunny dirt roads and passing the odd fortified granary of Grancia di Cuna. The end of this leg is inside the old city centre of Buonconvento, mentioned for the first time in 1100.

Day 5  :  Buonconvento  -  Bagno Vignoni  -  27 km.  -  The itinerary that we'll follow during the fifth leg is entirely inside the scenic Val d'Orcia, declared  World Heritage Site by U.N.E.S.C.O. in 2004. Biking gentle ups and downs along panoramic dirt roads and asphalt byroads we'll reach the medieval hamlet of San Quirico d'Orcia before entering the magic thermal town of Bagno Vignoni with its characteristic square built around a huge thermal water pool.

Day 6  :  Bagno Vignoni  -  Proceno  -  48 km.  -  A delightful downhill to valley floor will lead us to the ancient medieval hospital of Le Briccole; from there we'll be cycling a long and increasingly scenic uphill to the medieval village and castle of Radicofani, where we'll enjoy a fantastic 360 degrees view over the whole Val d'Orcia. The final stretch of the ride will begin with an exciting downhill on asphalt until we reach the border with Lazio. Then we'll eventually reach Proceno following scenic country dirt roads.

Day 7  :  Proceno  -  Bolsena  -  29 km.  -  During this last stage we'll be biking to Acquapendente, where we'll visit the suggestive Church of Holy Sepulchre, (which crypt is the exact reproduction of the omonymous one in Jerusalem). The last stretch of today's ride will follow a very scenic itinerary inside the Bolsena lake crater: we'll be biking dirt roads across olive groves, meadows and woodlands.
